Bathrooms in Short Hills and Millburn homes.
Millburn grew around the Morris and Essex railroad. Short Hills, inside the township, was planned by Stewart Hartshorn, who began buying land there in 1877.
The railroad turned Millburn from a farming area into a Victorian residential community in the 1800s. Hartshorn assembled about 1,550 acres and paid for the railroad station himself in 1879. The Short Hills Park Historic District, on the National Register since 1980, holds houses built between 1870 and 1928, the early ones in the Shingle, Queen Anne and Stick styles.
Around those streets, the township filled in over the following century, and today many lots carry a newer or much-enlarged house. So a bathroom here can be 120 years old, 20 years old, or somewhere in between, and each one opens differently.
What most owners have in common is the goal: a primary bath that feels like the rest of the house, and guest baths that hold up to real use.
What that means for your remodel
- Large primary baths need planning for heat and ventilation, especially with a big shower and a tub.
- Heavy stone-look slabs and freestanding tubs need a floor that can carry them. We check before we order.
- In older houses, we reroute plumbing where past renovations left it awkward.
- Newer homes often have builder-grade showers. We replace the pan and waterproofing, not just the tile.

- Freestanding tubs, double vanities and makeup stations.
- Custom niches and benches, all under Schluter waterproofing.
- Guest baths and kids' baths that match the finish level of the house.
- Powder rooms finished to match the rest of the house.

Labor only: demolition and disposal, prep, Schluter waterproofing, installation and cleanup. You buy the tile, vanity, fixtures and setting materials from the product list we give you. Permit fees, and anything we find behind the walls, are separate and priced in writing. A suite with slab walls, custom glass and a new layout can go past the top of the primary range; those we price only after we see the room. These are the same ranges our online calculator uses; your real number comes in writing after the visit.
