Towns we serve in Essex County.

The county has 22 municipalities. These are the towns where we visit most often, each with its own page.

  • Livingston — our home base; mostly postwar homes
  • Montclair — railroad-era Victorians, Tudors and Colonial Revivals
  • Short Hills & Millburn — a planned 1870s village and larger primary suites
  • West Orange — Llewellyn Park, postwar homes, condos and townhouses
  • Maplewood — 1900s-1930s foursquares, Colonial and Tudor Revivals

We also work in South Orange, Verona, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, Roseland, Essex Fells, the Caldwells and Nutley. Ask about your town.

Homes across Essex County.

Essex County's suburbs grew in layers. The railroad came first, and towns like Montclair, Millburn and Maplewood filled with houses from the late 1800s to the 1930s. Later, the land farther west filled in after World War II, and Livingston grew fastest in those years.

For bathrooms, that means two common starting points. Older homes bring plaster walls, cast-iron drains and small upstairs baths. Postwar homes bring original tile set in a thick mortar bed, and layouts that are sound but tired.

Across the county, the permit process works the same way: bathroom work that changes plumbing, electrical or framing is permitted under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code through the town's construction or building office, with plumbing and electrical inspections.

What we build here

  • Walk-in and curbless showers.
  • Tub-to-shower conversions.
  • Primary suites with double vanities and freestanding tubs.
  • Hall and guest baths.
  • Schluter waterproofing behind every shower.
How we remodel bathrooms

What a bathroom costs in Essex County.

The ranges are the same in every Essex County town. What changes is the house: plaster and cast-iron drains in the railroad-era homes, mortar-bed tile in the postwar ones.

ProjectLabor only
Tub-to-shower conversionThe tub comes out and a tiled shower goes in, in the same spot.$6,500 – $16,750
Hall or guest bath, full remodelFloor, walls, shower or tub, vanity and toilet. Size and finish level move the number.$12,000 – $26,000
Primary bathA larger shower, a double vanity, often a tub, a bench or a moved drain.$23,000 – $50,000+

These ranges are labor: demolition, disposal, prep, Schluter waterproofing, installation and cleanup. They contain no material. You buy the tile, vanity, fixtures, thinset, grout and waterproofing kit from the product list we prepare for your room. Permit fees and anything found behind the walls are priced separately, in writing, before we proceed. Details in the New Jersey bathroom remodel cost guide.
