Bathroom Remodeling in Madison, NJ

Madison homes near the train are often a century old. Farther out, many were built on land that once grew roses. We remodel bathrooms in both parts of the Rose City.

Bathrooms in Madison homes.

The railroad arrived in 1838 and turned Madison into a commuter suburb. Its greenhouses grew roses for New York florists, and by 1889 it was known as the Rose City.

Walkable neighborhoods grew up around the town center and the station from the 1800s on, while great estates spread out from the core around the turn of the 20th century. Later, land that had been farmed or used for rose greenhouses became house lots for single-family homes.

That history leaves Madison with older houses close to Main Street and the train, and newer homes on former greenhouse and estate land farther out. The first usually have small bathrooms with plaster walls. The second usually have more room and a bathroom that has never been touched.

Either way, we open the room, see what we are working with, and price the hidden parts in writing.

What that means for your remodel

  • Older homes near downtown: expect plaster, old drain lines and a floor that may need leveling.
  • Mid-century homes: original tile and tubs, and fans that vent into the attic instead of outside.
  • A second bath is often possible in an older house. We look at where the plumbing can reach.
  • Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. We are an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm.

How we remodel bathrooms

What a bathroom costs in Madison.

An older house near Main Street and a newer one on former greenhouse land start from the same three rows. What moves the number is the size of the room and what we find once it is open.

ProjectLabor only
Tub-to-shower conversionThe tub comes out and a tiled shower goes in, in the same spot.$6,500 – $16,750
Hall or guest bath, full remodelFloor, walls, shower or tub, vanity and toilet. Size and finish level move the number.$12,000 – $26,000
Primary bathA larger shower, a double vanity, often a tub, a bench or a moved drain.$23,000 – $50,000+

The ranges are for labor: tearing out, hauling away, prep, Schluter waterproofing, installing and cleaning up. Materials are not included and are purchased by you, from tile and fixtures to thinset, grout and the waterproofing kit, following the product list we give you. Permit fees and anything hidden behind the walls get their own written line. See the bathroom remodel cost guide for the full breakdown.

Madison bathroom questions.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in Madison?
Yes, when plumbing, electrical or structural work is involved. We file with Madison's Building and Construction Department under the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and schedule the plumbing and electrical inspections.
What does a bathroom remodel cost in Madison?
For labor, a tub-to-shower conversion runs $6,500 to $16,750, a full hall bath $12,000 to $26,000 and a primary bath $23,000 to $50,000 or more. Materials are separate: you buy them from the product list we give you. Your exact number comes in writing after the visit, and our cost guide shows how the ranges work.
Can you match the style of an older Madison house?
Yes. We can use tile, fixtures and a vanity that suit the house, while the waterproofing, drains and wiring are all new.
What if you find damage behind the walls?
We stop, show you photos, and give you a written change order with a fixed price before any extra work. Nothing moves forward without your signature.
How long will it take?
It depends on the scope and on when your materials arrive. You get the schedule in writing before we start.
Do you work near Madison?
Yes: Chatham, Morristown, Florham Park, Morris Township and Harding.
